Salamanca is one of the Spanish cities with
more monuments, possessing one of the most important
historical heritage in Spain. Entering the city allow us
to enjoy an authentic architecture spectacle. The city
offers its visitor the possibility of contemplating all
architectonic styles. Its buildings, constructed with
Villamayor´s stone, provide Salamanca a
personality of its own and a peculiar golden tone. Nowadays,
Salamanca is a city of intense
academic and cultural life, extending itself beyond its
geographical limits. The city, that in 9th of November
of 1988 was granted the title "World´s Heritage
Site" by UNESCO has become a national, and maybe
international, reference. |

Any tour in
Salamanca must start off its magnificent Plaza
Mayor (Main Square), constructed in baroque style. Salamanca is not only famous for being a
university city, but also for having two cathedrals,
equally beautiful, each one with its own style. Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral) impresses by its
size and gothic style. Catedral Vieja (Old
Cathedral) shows a Romanesque style. In it, we can also
find Torre del Gallo (Rooster's Tower) which apse turns
to be one of the Spanish Romanesque's masterworks. In
the outside, Patio Chico constitutes one of the most
cozy and peaceful corners of Salamanca. Next to
it, there is a most beautiful garden, Calixto and
Melibea´s Orchard.

Also very close we find
the University, with a such particular and
universal at the same time Plateresque façade. Facing
it, Patio de Escuelas where a statue of Fray Luis
contemplates the façade. In Escuelas Menores (Minor
Schools) we can contemplate the so called Cielo de
Salamanca (Salamanca´s Sky) a "fresco" painting
representing Sun and Mercury, Zodiac´s signs and the
four winds.

Plaza de Anaya (Anaya Square) is dominated by the
impressive neoclassic façade of Palacio de Anaya
(Anaya Palace) and the northern façade of
Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral). Casa de las
Conchas (House of Shells), of late XVth century,
combines late gothic with new Renaissance styles.
Colegio de los Irlandeses (Irishmen´s School),
from XVIth century, lined up around an inner cloister.
Property of the noble house of Alba, Monterrey Palace
displays a crossing between late gothic and Renaissance
Plateresque style. Salamanca is one of the Spanish
cities that conserves a lot of its historical past.
Almost all buildings in the town center are constructed
with Villamayor´s Stone, with suggestive golden
tonality; this fact has worthed Salamanca its
"Golden City" surname. |
