Blue Excursion

Between Spain and Portugal: Los Arribes del Duero Region.

A Boat Trip along the Gorges of the Duero River.

The landscapes of the Arribes del Duero Region include some of the most spectacular and breathtaking vistas available on the river Duero, with its fabulous gorges separating Spain from its neighbour Portugal. You are invited to participate in a boat trip along the Duero’s tranquil waters, encased within gorges whose cliffs are sometimes more than 200 metres high, populated by an amazingly rich fauna within a protected and respected environment.

During our trip (1h30min) to the Arribes we will have time for eating the packet lunch offered by the organisation. When arriving we will be able to admire the breathtaking vistas of the Duero river above the Aldeadavila dam from the Mirador del Fraile (Priest's Viewpoint) or the Picon de Felipe (Philip's Peak) cliffs.

After a small transfer to the Playa del Rostro (Beach of the Face), we will be boarding the crystal-covered-boat for a 1h30m navigation on the international waters separating Spain from Portugal. Vultures, eagles, kestrels and many other interesting birds will be observing us from above. And, if we are lucky, we will be able to watch one of the few black storks (cigüeña negra) remaining in Europe.

A small refreshment will be served at the Playa del Rostro before our return to Salamanca. We will have time for a stop at the impressive Almendra dam, the highest in Spain (202 m).

Red Excursion

Toro and Zamora. The Red Wine and the Romanic Art.

Toro is the capital of the Toro Appellation wines and is the seat of the Regulation Council for these wines. In recent years, Toro wines have come to occupy an outstanding position among word’s top class reds. The wines owe their “backbone” to the Tinta de Toro variety, one of the oldest strains in the Duero region, whose original qualities (colour, strength and robustness) have been coalesced in the new red wines of the twenty-first century. But Toro is also a fine historical-architectural ensemble, and is above all famous for its 12th century Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, one of the most important Romanesque monumental buildings in Spain. Zamora is also a very special city, close to the border with Portugal, and steeped in tradition and ancient buildings and monuments, and preserves in its old town an important legacy of Romanesque art, which has earned it the declaration of Historic-Artistic site.

We head for the Toro Apellation region (Denominacion de Origen, D.O.), where you will be invited to visit one of the most famous and representative wineries of the Toro D.O., the Bodegas Fariña winery, and which is more important, to taste their excellent wines, duly fleshed out with tapas based on local produce (including, of course, the famous ewe's cheese from Zamora). And then we will (at least try to) work off our meal through the timeless streets of the city of Toro. Today, it is still easy to contemplate the rich history of the city simply by strolling through its streets, admiring its palatial mansions and houses, with their family coats of arms on high, and wondering at the secrets of its churches and monasteries. From the Colegiata, in the very heart of the city, you will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful vistas of the River Duero possible. Inside the Colegiata, a complete must see, the Puerta de la Majestad (Door of the Majesty), with a rare polychromatic Gothic portico and rich ornamentation.

After a 30min transfer, we will continue our immersion on the spanish Romanesque with a short visit of Zamora. Set on the banks of the River Duero and right on the Ruta de la Plata (Silver Road) route, its medieval importance has left a mark in the shape of walls, palaces and churches. An obligatory stop is the 12th century Cathedral, with a wonderful Byzantine-style dome that has become a symbol of the city.

In the return travel to Salamanca, as we move over the Spanish meseta through the Ruta de la Plata, we will be able to appreciate the vast empty spaces set in an azure sky presiding over a landscape typical from Castilla y Leon.
