What is the Institute on Community Integration?

The Institute on Community Integration (INICO) is the only Institute in the University of Salamanca, and in the Spanish society, devoted to the disabled people.
The INICO was legally estabished in1997 by the regional government´s Departament of Education (Regional Bill 181/1997) although the INICO has been developing its training programs and researchactivities since 1991.
The mission of the INICO is to undertake specialized research and training activities and to offer technical support that promote , increases and facilitates living conditions for disadvantaged people in different contexts through their life-span. Target population includes people with physical, psychological or sensory disabilities, as well as people with chronic-illness or psychiatric disorders, minorities and disadvantaged people.

Objectives

INICO´s main objectives are:

  • To increase and consolidate high quality research lines, at a national and international level.
  • To strengthen postgraduate and specialized training of both researchers and direct-care professionals, particulary in Spain and Latin-American.
  • To organizate meetings, lectures, seminars, workshops and congresses.
  • To publish scientific literature.
  • To create a Bibliographic and Resource Center.
  • To promote interdisplinary collaboration by means og courses and joint research activities among Departmens, Centers, and Research Institutes of various European, North-American and Latin-American countries.

The Institute gathers professors and researchers from the University of Salamanca, pre-and post-doctorale grant-aided students, professors from other Spanish and foreign universities, and technical and administrative personnel.

It is supported by over a twenty public and private institutions, at a national and international level.

Funding Sources

The INICO is funded through:

  • Reseach and counseling activities paartnerships with public and private institutions at a nacional and international level, with ad hoc contracts.
  • Post-graduate and Doctoral programs with financial support from public institutions (e.g. National Social Servicies).
